2008-2009 Program Year Off to a Good Start

STC Chicago launched its 2008-2009 program year with substance and style at the Carleton Hotel in Oak Park last night. A big thanks to patent attorney Bob Brill for doing a presentation on intellectual property law and its implications for technical communicators. A summary of the presentation is available here.

It looks like it's shaping up to be another great year here in Chicago!

September At-a-Glance Photo Features Downtown Public Art

Chicago has strong tradition of public art. Some pieces are created by high-profile artists and prominently located, like Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate (more commonly known as "the Bean"). Others challenge our perceptions of what art can be, like Kurt Perschke's Red Ball, which moves from place to place and encourages us to interact with it.

It can be easy to overlook smaller pieces like this downtown mural, which celebrates aspects of everyday life and provides a vibrant spot tucked away in an unexpected place.

To see it in on location, venture out to the corner of E. South Water St. and Michigan Ave. It's on the east side of the second building in from the south corner.

By the way, there were no winners in this month's photo contest. We hope you enjoyed the challenge! Be sure to check out next month's edition of STC Chicago At-a-Glance for another chance to compete. Thanks, again, to Kelly Oja for donating this month's mystery photo.

How Don Spent His Summer

Even when our members move out of the area, we remain incredibly proud of their accomplishments.

Former STC Chicago President Don Cunningham is no exception. The current Radford University English professor has been traveling across the U.S., presenting technical writing seminars to professional engineers and architects. Recently, Cunningham journeyed to Japan to deliver an intensive three-day seminar to professors and students at Aichi Prefectural University in Nagoya.

“Writing is the most prevalent activity for professional engineers, requiring up to 70 percent of their workday,” Cunningham said. “Clear and accurate communication skills are essential in conducting effective and successful business.”

Google Chrome Comic by McCloud

Google released its new open-source Web browser Google Chrome today. Interestingly, I first heard about the release on the ATTW listserv, where the discussion turned to Scott McCloud's comic book, commissioned by Google "for journalists and bloggers."
