October's At-A-Glance Photo Contest Zoomed in on IIT Sculpture

This month’s photo showed American artist George Segal’s 1986 sculpture, Man on a Bench, located on IIT’s main Chicago campus. To make the challenge more difficult, we revealed just the head and shoulders silhouetted against Perlstein Hall's west windows. The figure--cast in bronze and seated on a park bench--is both specific and deliberately vague. Dramatically lit on an early fall morning, he is especially mysterious-looking.

IIT commissioned the work for the centennial of Mies van der Rohe’s birth. To take a look for yourself, visit Perlstein Hall on the west side of State Street, just north of 33rd Street, on the main campus.

September At-a-Glance Photo Features Downtown Public Art

Chicago has strong tradition of public art. Some pieces are created by high-profile artists and prominently located, like Anish Kapoor's Cloud Gate (more commonly known as "the Bean"). Others challenge our perceptions of what art can be, like Kurt Perschke's Red Ball, which moves from place to place and encourages us to interact with it.

It can be easy to overlook smaller pieces like this downtown mural, which celebrates aspects of everyday life and provides a vibrant spot tucked away in an unexpected place.

To see it in on location, venture out to the corner of E. South Water St. and Michigan Ave. It's on the east side of the second building in from the south corner.

August At-a-Glance Photo Identified

This month's At-a-Glance photo contest featured a close-up of the Bob Newhart statue at Navy Pier. Commissioned by the TV Land network, the statue depicts Oak Park native Bob Newhart as his character on The Bob Newhart Show, the Chicago-based psychologist Dr. Robert Hartley. Don't forget to say "Hi Bob!" the next time you're there!
